Captain's Match Report
Phew What a Scorcher!
Match number five and a visit to a sunny Nizels Golf and Country Club. When I say sunny, I mean a silly hot 32 degrees. As I said, “Congratulations to those that came in early without finishing, they were the sensible ones!”. There were however 42 “mad dogs” that made it round.
A good breakfast bacon bap with a brioche bun (Dead Posh!) and a good talking too by teacher about taking a gallon of water and lashings of sunblock, and we were ready for golf.
On to the golf, with 45 players taking part. I went out first with Pete Tweddell and Richard McMcKinnon. As a three-ball, we kept up a good pace, but it was hot — really hot. By the 12th, and with a two-hole gap behind of us, we decided to introduce the “MAGS Hydration Break”. We spent a pleasant 10 minutes on the bench, rehydrating and discussing the various disastrous shots that had brought us to that point.
With the success of the hydration break established we climbed the hill on par 5 15th and decided to have a 2nd hydration break while contemplating the horrors that awaited us on the 16th. After a circuitous route, via a left hook into various trees and fauna then spurted my ball out onto the green and a par. Again, I attributed this newfound skill to the MAGS Hydration Break.
Back in the clubhouse we enjoyed a very well-deserved beer and waited for the field to come in.
On to the results. Nobody with plus 40 points so the sun did get to us. It was a tight finish. Well done Barry Smith to win Division Three, the overall day and the Chairmans Trophy, with 38 points but only on countback, a better back 9 winning the day. Also well done to Ian Marshallsay on winning division Two with 38 points, just losing on countback. Well played Mike Kingsman on coming first in Division One and overall, third with thirty-seven points.
Next month, nearer to home for me at The Ridge Golf Club. It’s my Captains Day so we’ll have some extra events going on and I look forward welcoming you all to my home club. We are set to do battle for the Captains Day Trophy. See you all in September, hopefully it will be a bit cooler.
