Match number three and a visit round the M25 to Woldingham Golf Club. Nestled in the serenity of the Halliloo Valley just north of Woldingham, in the heart of the Surrey North Downs. I’m told it’s the 2nd most played club by Igolf members in 2025. As it was last year it was going to be a hot one! The day started well enough with an excellent full English breakfast, tea and coffee in the clubhouse. After welcoming everyone back including the Muchacho's d'Espana we got away to an early start at 9.00.
Onto the golf, with 23 players playing. I was out first with Dave Elsworth, Adrian and Candice. A breeze, coming up the valley kept us cool. Shot of the day for us was probably Dave hitting a driver to 10 feet up the hill to the difficult par 3 seventh hole. Most came up short!
Back in the clubhouse we enjoyed sitting out in the sunshine while we were waiting for Pete to calculate the scores. Some deliberation later, questions were raised over the ruling on new members so just to confirm you need to put in 3 cards after you’ve joined as a member before you can win. That aside, well played Lee Parnell and Grant Lewis, who came in with 40+ scores as new members!
On to the results. A tightly packed field and a Stapleford scoring average of 31 points. The winning score was only 5 shots over the average. Well done Dave Verga to win Division One, the overall day and the Summer Plate, one shot clear on thirty-six points. Also well done to Nick Allcott on winning division Two with 32 points. Well played Mark Parsons on coming first in Division three and overall, second with thirty-five points.
Thanks to everyone for largely keeping up with play (we were under 4 hours), please keep that going! Sorry, if I upset anyone around citations, I did mean it to be a bit of light-hearted banter. However, to get things in perspective, I was warned before start of play that if we were too slow, they would stop us from playing there again. That would not be fair to everyone.
Next month, nearer to home at Sittingbourne Golf Club. I’m on holiday so Mike Fairbrass will be deputising for me on Friday 17th July, to do battle for the Summer Bowl. See you all in August.
Andy Webb, Captain
