Match number 2 and a visit to the lovely Chestfield Golf Club. Peter Alliss the Ryder Cup Player, Television Presenter & Honorary Member when describing the club said “One of Kent's hidden gems. A spectacular clubhouse, breathtaking views, and likely the purest putting surfaces you will find in the county.". The club steeped in history oozes golfing heritage, boasting one of the oldest buildings used as a clubhouse in the world.
The day started well enough with bacon rolls, tea and coffee in the clubhouse. Then my 1st mad panic when the gang of six flying back from golf in Spain were delayed. Some hasty recalculations and movement of groups and we were ready to go.
Onto the golf, with 33 players playing. I was out first with Nick Allcott and Katrina Howard. The sea breeze was fresh and made it a little tough. However, Peter Alliss was not wrong, and it was the greens that provided the most comments. The consensus lied somewhere between fantastic, true, fast and then all the way to ridiculous and impossible to play! My thoughts are fast, very true and exciting but don’t get your chip/putts pace/line (or anything else) wrong, as the greens will always punish you.
We found this out on the 3rd when a putt dribbled two cm past a hole and then proceeded to roll ten ft off the green and into the greenside bunker. We had been warned!
Back in the clubhouse we enjoyed a rolling dinner of ham, egg and chips and a well-earned pint.
On to the results. A relatively low Stapleford scoring game of under twenty-seven points (the greens taking most of the responsibility). Some overcame and Zung had an excellent round to win Division 1 and the overall day; two shots clear on thirty-four points. Also well done to Ian Rowan on winning division Two on countback with 28 points. Well played Peter Blouet, coming first in Division three and overall, second with thirty-two points.
Thanks to everyone for largely keeping up with play (we were under 4 hours) and I hope you all enjoyed the golf.
On a final note, we were all lucky early on when a thief, who has been stealing clubs from outside clubhouses was spotted by an assistant from pictures that had been posted. The thief left (thankfully without our clubs) and headed to Selsey Golf Club to continue his trade. Unfortunately for him the assistant had called the police with the car number and they arrested him there.
Next month we will be travelling around the M25 to play Woldingham Golf Club. I look forward to seeing you all there, on June 19th, to do battle for the Summer Shield.
