Captain's Match Report
My first day as the new captain and I was a little worried about the venue and the two weddings we had at last year’s event. However, there was only a small wedding, and we had the bar to ourselves.
The weather was excellent for the time of year if a little windy. The day commenced with a full English breakfast which was good. However, we had the now traditional queues at the lone toaster. Come on Broome Park, go mad and get a second one!
Following this we had a pause to remember Graeme McAusland who sadly passed away recently. Our wishes go to the family.
Geoff then opened the AGM. Important points to note are that Geoff confirmed Ian Marshallsay, Roy Goodhew and Andy Webb had passed the vetting procedures (unlike some recently) and were duly appointed Secretary, Vice-Captain and Captain respectively. Following this we discussed two main points being the dropping of the slope contingent of the handicap which was approved. Also, we are looking at dropping one of the winter dates (probably December) due to weather, fog and light restrictions but still having a dinner. Full details will be available in the minutes. We then received our new handicaps from the Handicap secretary followed by shocked silence and the erecting of a scaffold at the hotel entrance.
Onto the golf, with 30 players playing. I was out first with Pete Tweddell and Mike Kingsman. The wind made it a little tough and the greens could have had some more attention with weeds proving an issue. I think the average score at 27 reflected this.
Mike had an excellent round with two birdies in eighteen holes which got him over the line to win the day on thirty-eight points and receive the St Georges Day Shield winner’s trophy. Also well done to Tim on winning division Two and getting back the over baked winners mug he had forgotten in the oven! Well played Candice, coming first in Division three and overall second with thirty-five points. Sorry about the over baked mug! Maybe we should vet the supplier?
Once again, can I take this opportunity to thank everyone for coming to Broome Park, to Mike Fairbrass (the departing captain) for all his help last year and to all the members of the committee for their sterling efforts throughout the year.
Next month is a treat, we will be playing Chestfield Golf Club (one of my favourite courses in Kent). I look forward to seeing you all there, on May 15th, to do battle for the Mick Miller Trophy.
Finally, I’m pleased to announce the handicap secretary received an amnesty (as nobody could do his job) and he escaped the noose.
