Well, that’s it — the curtain has fallen on my glorious (and occasionally questionable) reign as Captain. And what better way to sign off than a day at Faversham filled with golf, grub, and just the right amount of chaos.
We kicked things off in proper style with a full English breakfast — because nothing says “peak athletic performance” like sausages, bacon, and a mild sense of regret before teeing off.
I had the pleasure (and I use that term loosely) of being joined by Dave Williams, Tony Jacobs, and Paul Turner. A fine group… although one of us (Tony) spent most of the round serving as the primary source of entertainment. To his credit, he took the relentless banter like a seasoned professional — or at least like a man who had no choice.
As tradition dictates, we teed off last thanks to the Champions League standings. A special mention here to Paul Damper, who was absolutely delighted not to be out last for once — moving up to Group 3 clearly felt like a career-defining achievement. I’ve rarely seen a man so happy to not be out last.
The course, it must be said, was in fantastic condition for the time of year, although the speed of the greens left a lot of us with mouths dropping to the grass in utter disbelief — and, in a truly historic moment, buggies were finally allowed.
My own golf? Let’s just say it was… “creative.” Moments of brilliance were sprinkled generously between moments we shall never speak of again. Fortunately, the quality of the banter more than made up for any deficiencies in the golf.
Post-round, we returned to the clubhouse for a rolling feast of ham, egg, and chips — the kind of meal that really says, “you’ve earned this… or at least survived.”
Then came prize giving — always a highlight. Congratulations to all the winners, but a very special nod to Dave Williams for securing the top spot of the year and lifting the Champions League Trophy. A fantastic achievement… although we’ll all be keeping a closer eye on him next season.
All in all, a brilliant way to wrap up the year. Great golf, great company, and memories that will last… at least until the next round of banter begins. It’s been a true privilege to serve you all as your Captain for the year, and as I mentioned on Friday, I owe a lot of the success to you, the members of MAGS who always show up come rain, wind, or shine, and make the events really worthwhile. So, thank you again from the bottom of my heart.
Captain signing off — it’s been emotional. 🍻
