Captain's Match Report
The day kicked off in the most athlete-appropriate way possible: bacon rolls and enough caffeine to power a small village. Our 25 intrepid golfers arrived with a familiar look of "wet-weather-gear PTSD" in their eyes. Most of us were hoping the waterproofs would stay in the car for a change, rather than becoming our second skin (much like the bacon rolls have become a staple of our existence).
Tales from the Fairway
I had the distinct pleasure of being paired with Mike Kingsman and his guest, Mark Hudston. It turns out Mike and Mark are basically human GPS systems; their course knowledge was the only thing keeping us on the straight and narrow as the holes flew by.
As for the course? It was a bit "tender" (read: boggy) in spots, and the greens were a game of Russian Roulette—some were lightning-fast, others were... not. But considering we’ve basically lived in a submarine for the last few weeks, West Malling did a stellar job. A massive shout-out to the club for letting us use trollies; my lower back sends its sincere thanks.
We almost got away with it, too! We stayed dry for 90% of the day, right up until the 16th tee, when the weather suddenly and aggressively U-turned to make sure we didn't get too smug.
The 19th Hole
The sight of ham, egg, and chips at the finish line was like a desert mirage, but with more protein. It was the perfect backdrop for the usual post-round "if only that putt had dropped" post-mortems and the prize-giving.
