Captain's Match Report
Well, this was a shock to the system, I must say! I arrived at 8:15 only to find out that our Captain Darren had been informed that he was not allowed to use his swanky new single-seater ride-on buggy, as the course would not handle it. In fairness, some of the course gave The Somme a good name. But more about that shortly.
And so, the days' proceedings were handed over to yours truly. It commenced with one of the nicest bacon rolls I’ve had in a long while. This was swiftly followed by the Head Greenkeeper (or whatever his title was) outlining course conditions, reminding us to repair divots and pitch marks, but ultimately, to have a good day. It was also decided among us, that due to the conditions, the ball could be lifted, wiped and replaced not only on the fairways but anywhere else on the course where the ball came to lie.
I was teamed up with Dave Verga and Paul Keenor and I must say, a good day was had by all 3 of us. Lots of laughs and banter which is what it’s all about. Overall, the fairways were in reasonable condition given the time of year, and despite some of the greens having a fair amount of standing water in places, the course was enjoyable, and apart from the first half an hour, the rain stayed away which was a bonus. However, some of the side paths that led from one green to the next tee saw wheels on buggies start at a 7” diameter and end up closer to 10”. Couple this, with impromptu renditions of Torvill and Dean’s Bolero when going downhill, I’m surprised that there were not any retirements from slipped discs and pulled back muscles.
Once again, the team at Redlibbets did us proud with a lovely meal afterwards and they look forward to welcoming us again next time around.
I do hope you all enjoyed a great day of golf. The next event is scheduled for Friday, 21st March to be held at Faversham, where hopefully you can join what will be Darren’s last event of his captaincy year. Sadly, due to a prior commitment, I will not be there to also take part. That might be a blessing in disguise for some of you, given how the results of today’s event panned out. Trust me when I say this was likely a complete one-off!!!
