Captain's Match Report

Sittingbourne Golf Club is just under 100 years old having been founded by local business men in 1929. Six sites were viewed with Wormdale (the current site) as the chosen one. Harry Hunter oversaw the construction and was originally a 12 hole course. In the spring of 1931 a further 6 holes were added bringing it up to 18. During the war 6 holes were requisitioned by ministry of Food and not returned until 1952. Although some holes remain many are changed due to the A249 going through the course taking out 20 acres. The new course (as it is today) was opened in July 1993 alongside a new clubhouse. The course is maintained to a high standard as we saw today. The course certainly makes for a good walk being 6,299 yards off the White tees. I was approached on my arrival by the course marshal who advised that anybody wearing shorts must wear white socks and golf tops must be tucked in to trousers !! The weather was unbelievably good and an excellent turnout of golfers, many whom had never played the course before. We started with Bacon rolls and Coffee/Tea then first tees at 10.20am followed by rolling Ham, Egg and Chips. Thanks to my playing partners on the day Mike Fairbrass, John Peachey and Dave Williams, all who played some good golf. Golf over it was good to get an ice cold drink with which to rehydrate (all be it alcoholic). A big thankyou to the staff for looking after us so well, particularly in the bar and restaurant area. Very little time waiting for food and drinks. Well done and congratulations to all winners.
