Captain's Match Report

36 of us turned up at the picturesque setting of Broome Park to do battle for the St. Georges Cup. The magnificent manor house was built in the 1600’s and became the country home of Lord Kitchener until his death in 1916.

However, the day started with a very good full english breakfast followed by the AGM. Ian Rowan gave a brief run down of all that had happened since our last AGM 2 years ago. We then voted on the items listed on the agenda all of which were passed without much discussion as none were particularly contentious. I was honoured to be voted captain for the coming year with Tony Jacobs as my deputy. A new committee position of Players Liaison was created to give a point of contact for members to raise issues for the committee to discuss. Geoff Mills was elected to this position.

Now to the golf. The weather was overcast and started out chilly making those that had chosen to wear shorts ruing their decision but as the day went on it warmed up slightly. It was mentioned by several people that the course was not in good condition especially the greens which had several uneven bare patches. Scoring was quite good with several people scoring in the 40’s and the average score for the day being 31.

The overall winner and winner of Division 1 was Chris Lewis with a score of 43. The next highest score was 41 which was achieved by 3 players, Nigel Fenwick who won Division 2 and Geoff Mills and John Burbridge. On the day Geoff was declared the Division 3 winner but on closer examination by Pete Tweddell it was found that John Burbridge was the actual winner. I believe Geoff took the news extremely well and tears were short lived. The winners of the nearest the pin on the par 3’s were Graeme McAusland, Phil Scotton and Stuart Verga. The closest the pin in 3 on the par 5 9th was Paul Damper.
