Perhaps like many of us, this was a new course to me, so driving into Pedham Place Golf Club last Friday, I was looking forward to playing what is described as a ‘all year-round golf course’. One thing that was already obvious was just how cold it was going to be, and the hard frost already meant there were no buggies. Oh dear, need to walk! Despite this, I was looking forward to a good day ahead. However, although I was proved mostly right, not all ended as well as it might.
After a lovely full monty breakfast, and the weather still looking fair, I was joined in my group by Brian Goodhew, Graeme McAusland and Barry England. We teed off at 10AM, and with the sun shining directly down the fairway, ball spotting was a challenge. However, one thing that was already apparent was that the course was in excellent order, something that was confirmed by the condition of the first green. And so, it proved for the rest of the round; mud-free fairways and good greens, even though they understandably could in places be a bit two paced, as the frost come out of them. After 9 holes I was doing ok’ish and looking forward to having at least a similar back 9. But at this stage, carrying all before him in our Group was Brian, with a score of 19 points, 10 of which he got in a blistering first three holes!
Into the back 9 and the weather had changed, with by now a grey overcast sky and a chilling breeze. But, regardless, as we got to the end of our nonetheless very enjoyable round, it was lovely to see that Brian, Graeme and Barry had scored some good points in and around the high 20’s and low 30’s. But alas, for me the metaphoric wheels fell off, and I found myself mulling over what Ian, our chairman had said, in saying he hoped we had a better day at the course than any of the times he had played here. At least, I suppose I could say that no matter how hard I had tried, I didn’t lose a ball. But one thing for sure was how good the course was in terms of its general condition, drainage etc. and it was more than nice to finish a round with clean (ish) gear.
Back in a nice warm clubhouse, those who were able to stay enjoyed an excellent dinner of steak and ale pie followed by fruit crumble. Yum! We shall return!
Anyway, it was thought on the day that Adrian Hardvanko had taken the spoils, until Peter Tweddell our handicap Secretary, subsequently noticed when checking through the scores for loading onto the website, that Stuart Verga’s actual handicap meant he had pipped Adrian by a single point. Therefore, with apologies to Adrian, from the 27 members who took part, the final results are confirmed as follows. Nigel Fenwick took Division 2 with a score of 35 points, Adrian took Division 1 with a score of 39 points, and it was Stuart Verga who took Division 3, and the overall prize of the Len Hall Trophy with an excellent score of 40 points.
And just to say the nearest the pin winners are as on the website, and our best guest was Kevin Gladwell, who came in with an excellent score of 34 points playing off a handicap of 24. And I must mention in despatches Tim Murphy (second card as a MAGS Member) who came in with 39 points playing off 24, and Tim Gibson (third card as a MAGS Member) who scored 36 points playing off 23. Very well done to both.
And so, the year moves on and our next meeting is on Friday 18 February 2022 at Southern Valley Golf Club, Thong Lane, Gravesend DA12 4LT. This is also an excellent winter course, and as usual Tim will circulate all the details in the near future.
In the meantime, stay safe and see you on the 18th.
All best wishes
Geoff
