Captain's Match Report

Faversham Golf Club is always a popular venue with Mags members because, it is not only anexcellent course to be playing at this time of year, but the welcome and hospitality is also warm and friendly.

As we enjoyed our breakfast of bacon roll and coffee, I had the pleasure of presenting Peter Steer with the shield for winning the Summer Match play competition. The final was between Peter and Ian Marshallsay, who he beat with a score of 3 & 2, so congratulations Peter.

The first tee was at 8.55 AM, and this month I was joined for a very enjoyable round by Paul Damper, Scott Cleaver and Dave Swinbank, who was making a return to the playing ranks after being out for some time. During the first hour or so, it got increasingly dark to the point if you didn’t know better, one could have easily been forgiven for thinking we were at the end of the day, not the beginning. Then, there was also the odd spot of rain, not really what was expected. One good thing, unlike the last time we were here, there was no wind to be worrying about. And happily, the day progressed the weather started to cheer up, whichfor some of us was more than could be said about the golf. Very early on, I could see how my day was going with putts edging up to the hole on all sides, but none dropping. And that’s how it continued, but then we all know that one!

By the time we got back to club house, each in our group were ruing missed chances but nonetheless, were our scores enough to get into the top 15? Err no, far from it.

As the scorecards came in, it was obvious that some members had put together a very good round of golf, which was reflected in the fact that from the thirty-two members who took part, the average score was thirty-four points.

We then enjoyed an excellent two course dinner with service to match, and therefore thanks to all concerned at the club for that.

And so, to the winners. Stuart Verga took Division 3 with a very good score of 46 points, Tony Jacobs continued his run of good form to take Division 2 with a score of 39 points, and the winner of Division 1 was Luke Moore with an excellent 47 points. And many congratulations as well go to Luke as he is also the winner of the Autumn Shield.

And just to saythe nearest the pin winners are as on the website and of the four guests who joined us, Zung Bennett took the bottle of wine with an excellent round of thirty-nine points.

And so, the year moves on again and our next meeting is on Friday 12 November 2021 at Southern Valley Golf Club, Thong Lane, Gravesend, Kent, DA12 4LT and as usual Tim will circulate all the details in the near future.

In the meantime, stay safe and hopefully see you on the 12th.

All best wishes

Geoff

Captain

Ps from Pete the admin… Well done to Luke, who clearly played an excellent round of golf. That humungous score came from playing to a handicap of 8! Fingers crossed I’ll be able to cut down his index to that over the coming months. 😉
