Captain's Match Report

As this was the first time we had been together since the sad loss of our good friend Dave Ealham, we started our day spending a few moments of quite reflection in his memory. Dave loved playing his golf with MAGS and he will be sorely missed. And just to say that condolences on behalf of the Society were sent to Dave’s wife, Mary, and a donation of £50 in his memory has been made to the Heart of Kent Hospice.

And, so to Nizels. With a warning that this was a longish course with some tricky holes, some of which inevitably involved water. I was probably not the only one to think that this could be a bit of a difficult day, and Dave Verga was so confident that this might be the case, he decided to run a book on how many golf balls would be lost, a bit more about that later.

With Nizels being one of the ‘premier’ courses we would be playing this year, it was not unsurprising that we had a brilliant turn-out of 41 members, with one guest.

Our day started with bacon rolls and coffee and for the first time in a long while, a draw was made on the day to decide the order of play. Also, the golf course is in places undergoing some major improvement work, which meant that although all holes were open, two of the par fours, the 13th and 18th were on temporary greens, and the fourth was surrounded by plastic fencing with a gap through the middle to the green! Anyway, for next year the Society will be getting a suitable compensatory discount.

I was playing this month alongside Brian Goodhew and John Burbridge. Brian and I shared a buggy and have to say for me, using a buggy could now be the way to go.

Out on the course it soon become apparent, that whilst water may be a hazard on some holes, the rough was also going to play its part. The rough was such that it made shot making difficult enough, even if you could find your ball in the first place! Anyway, as our round progressed a combination of water and the rough meant we had, what we thought at the time was our fair share of lost balls but, in fact we didn’t do too badly. I must at this point make mention of Brian’s round, which was very steady from start to finish, with him doing particularly well on the back nine. Also, John nailed a great iron shot onto the green at the very tricky par three sixteenth.

Back at the Clubhouse, as each group came in, it was obvious that any concerns that the course was going to play hard were not being reflected in many of the individual scores. Because of some uncertainty as to whether everyone had scored the shortened 13th and 18th holes in the same way, it was agreed that the points scored for these two shortened holes would be based on them still being a par four, and Pete Tweddell would on this basis check through all the cards and adjust any individual scores, as necessary. As it turned out, this did not result in any changes to those provisional winners announced on the day, and therefore with a score of 42 points, Brian Goodhew won Division 3, Darren Parker took Division 1 with a score of 37 points, and with an excellent score of 44 points, Ian Rowan took not only Division 2 but also rather ironically was the winner of the Chairman’s Trophy. So well done Brian and Darren and especially Ian.

Just to complete things, the average score for the day was 34 points and all the nearest the pin prizes are listed in the results on the web site. Well done to Mark Maidment, our one and only guest who came in with a score of 36 points.

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the total number of lost balls was 107, which no one guessed correctly so the pot is being rolled over to next month. For the record, the lowest number of balls lost in any one group was six and the highest was fifteen.

Our next event is on Friday 17 September 2021 at Chestfield Golf Club, Chestfield Road, Chestfield, Whitstable CT5 3LU. This is also one of our premier meetings for the year, so when Tim sends out the email with all the details, please confirm your interest in playing back to him as soon as you can.

Therefore, see you at Chestfield, and in the meantime, stay safe!

Best wishes

Geoff
