A Gale Force 8 on the Beaufort Scale generally impedes progress...
With strong winds, together with heavy rain showers being predicted, it was with some uncertainty that we gathered for our May event at Boughton Golf Club. On arrival, it was obvious that the wind was going to be a factor, but as for the heavy showers moving in, only time would tell.
Now, I have not played at Boughton for some considerable time so on entering the building I was not sure if I was in the club house or a night club with some very seedy lighting! Anyway, one thing was for sure, was the warm and friendly and, when it arrived, the full English breakfast was excellent.
I must also say that it was great to see one or two members again who for some time had not been able to join us on our golf days.
One other thing to mention is the complete mystery of what happened to the nearest the pin markers for the front 9, which Tim had given to me. They were on the table I was sitting at, but by the time I had given a few words of welcome the tabled had been cleared and they were gone! So that is why the nearest the pin markers on the front 9 were a rather scrappy looking bit of paper.
Anyway, having got over the loss of the markers, and a little bit of a reshuffle of the front groups due to changes in the numbers being able to attend on the day, my three-ball group got underway. This month, I had Adrian Reeman and new member David Withers playing with me. We started on the first, but Tim had managed to arrange for two groups to start from the tenth, which greatly helped in speeding things up.
It was more than unfortunate that only that week Dave Verga had to withdraw due to a damaged hand. He nonetheless came along, and despite his hand being impressively bandaged and wrapped in a plastic bag for further protection, he was still able to take payments and walk round the course to give us encouragement!
The course itself was in excellent condition, and the strong pace of the greens (and the wind) was something, that in my group anyway, caught us out on more than one occasion. As our round progressed, the vagaries and strength of the wind became more apparent. Great if the wind direction was blowing down the hole, more than difficult if it was against. Despite this we had a very enjoyable round with the wind being just another challenge. On completion of our round, the shelter of the club house was very welcome, and it was good to be able to sit and enjoy a drink prior to us being served with an excellent two course dinner of roast beef and trimmings, followed by apple pie and custard.
As the score cards came in it was obvious that despite the gale force winds, that had not stopped some members putting together a very good round of golf. When all the scores were totted up, from the 30 members who took part, Barry England took Division 1 with a score of 28 points and Darren Parker took Division 2 with a score of 29 points. Tim Grimes and Bob Crouch came in with a score of 35 points, but it was Tim who took Division 3 on count back (20 on the back 9!). Therefore Tim was also the overall winner, many congratulations for prevailing in the difficult conditions to take the Mick Miller Trophy with an excellent round of golf. And just to say the best guest was Mike Kingsman with a very good score of 32 points. And just to say apologies to Phil Scotton for the confusion on his score, which was all mine.
Our next event is Captain’s day at The Weald of Kent Golf Club on Thursday 24 June 2021. I hope you already have this date in your diary and further details of both the day, and the arrangements for the evening dinner, will be coming out soon. As part of our round of golf, I am already planning to have a pink ball challenge and a prize for the least number of recorded putts. So, if you can, please come along for both the golf and the dinner, which gives us the opportunity to be joined by partners and guests.
See you on the 24th!
Best wishes and stay safe,
Geoff
