I am sure like others, before playing at the Weald of Kent, my last round of golf was our Christmas event on 18 December 2020 at Kings Hill. Therefore, in preparation for this momentous return to playing golf, I decided I would give my clubs, my bag and trolley a bit of a spring clean. I have to say it is sometimes remarkable the stuff one carries around in a golf bag, ‘just in case’. But what I wasn’t quite expecting was to find a Christmas card neatly tucked away in a side pocket. Oh dear! A senior moment? But thank you to the sender, who to save my embarrassment will remain anonymous.
Anyway, with many golf clubs opening on 29 March and, understandably perhaps, pulling up the drawbridge when it came to hosting societies, we were pretty lucky that Tim was able to get us booked into the Weald of Kent. Have to say it was a strange feeling heading off from home. Can I really drive to a golf course and not just to Morrison’s? And is this really a sign that things are now finally on the up and the Boris road map is the real deal? Is this even a Wednesday? Anyway, it was just great to see so many of us able to be out playing golf , and for this day perhaps all that mattered was that the shackles were now that bit looser and the new normal (whatever that turns out to be!) had hopefully began.
We were as usual blessed with some fine weather and although we were able to play in groups of 4, the rule of 6 was of course in force for the day, something which the starter was keen we observed, and rightly so! The starter also pointed out that we would encounter quite a bit of sand on some fairways, because of the extensive drainage work that was being undertaken, and that some of the greens may be a bit bumpier than would normally be the case. But really, on this day who cared? We were playing golf out in the fresh air with our MAGS mates, so bring it on!
I had the great pleasure of playing with Steve Farley, Dave Elsworth, and Ian Marshallsay. I am not saying who, but two of our number had already managed to get a round of golf in the previous day. However, whether that would prove to be an advantage only time would tell. As we know our first tee was off a mat near where the ladies would normally tee off. Some good and some not so good drives followed but finally we were underway. What happened over the next 4 hours or so is perhaps best reflected in our respective scores. The starter was not wrong about the sand and the bumps and I managed to lose 3 balls, all in water, so guess how good a round I had! But surely the point is, whilst we all want to do as well as we possibly can, being with your mates in the fresh air, doing something which you enjoy (mostly anyway. LoL) is something to be thankful for.
Anyway, when all the scores were totted up, from the 32 players who took part, Tony Jacaobs took Division 3 with 31 points and Dave Verga took Division 2, also with a score of 31 points. In Division 1, Barry England took the honours with a score of 33 points, which was also the best score of the day. Therefore, many congratulations to Tony and Dave, and especially to Barry who as the overall winner, receives the Committee Shield.
I should also mention that the average for the day was 25 points and best guest who, was Phil Scotton with a score of 31 points.
Our next event is at Broome Park, Golf Club, Barham, Canterbury CT4 6QX and Tim has, as you will know, already circulated the details.
Also, following the survey that was undertaken, I hope you have in your diary that Captains Day this year is taking place at the Weald of Kent on Thursday 24 June 2021. By that time, the final set of Covid restrictions should have come to an end and I hope therefore we can have the sort of day and evening we have been able to enjoy in the past. Further details will therefore follow in due course.
Hopefully see you at Broome Park and in the meantime ,stay safe
Geoff
