With our Captain Graham having, with good reasons, to withdraw a couple of days before hand, 22 Society members and four guests made their way to West Malling Golf Club on 22 November 2019 to contest the Armistice Cup. For some the day had already got off to a challenging start with some serious delays on the M20 which in turn spilled onto surrounding roads. However, with a first tee off time of thankfully 10.00 AM there was despite the delays still time to have a hearty breakfast before setting out on what proved to be a testing round of golf. Although the course did not allow any buggies, thankfully for those of us who needed them we were allowed to use our electric trollies, without any insistence on the use of hedgehog tyres!
Despite the threatening clouds apart from a few spots of rain we managed to complete our rounds in the dry. However, the underfoot conditions presented challenges for all. In my group I had the pleasure of being with Tim Grimes, Sean Downs and Ian Brenchley and we quickly realised after the first couple of holes that this was a day to simply enjoy the fact we were lucky enough to be out on a Friday playing golf and the scores would have to look after themselves.
Back at the club house the dinner with a main course of cottage pie was exactly what the doctor ordered and when the scores were totted up it was Paul Damper who ran out the winner of Division 1 and the winner of the Armistice Cup with what proved to be a very solid round of 34 points. Division Two went to Scott Cleaver with 32 points and Division 3 went to Tony Jacobs with 25 points. Congratulations to all.
I would like to say a big thank you to Peter Tweddell and his magic spreadsheet for helping me with the results and for Tim Grimes for some useful admin pointers.
Finally, I hope everyone will be able to make it to Kings Hill for our Christmas event taking place on Friday 13 December 2019. This day is truly one of the highlights of the year with a very welcome half-way halt of real Christmas spirit (!) and a quality Christmas dinner all for the amazing price of £42. So, see you there!
