Captain's Match Report

‘Twas on a Friday morning that the MAGS came to play, please don’t let it be ruined, no, no rain today!!
On my way to the course driving through the beautiful countryside surrounding it, I was wondering what state the course would be in bearing in mind it had ‘hissed’ down with overnight rain. Faversham is one of our favourite courses, (founded in 1902), and from the moment we arrived there were smiles on everyone’s faces. The management and staff were so professional and welcoming which added to the atmosphere. What an amazing turnout of players, thirty-eight members and five guests all looking forward to the days golf, culminating in the crowning of the Champions League winner. With speed and efficiency, tea, coffee and really tasty bacon rolls were soon devoured and it was time to play. As we arrived at the 1st tee, there was a brief shower which didn’t return until the 18th, even then it was short lived. In the main a bright and at times sunny day but with a gusty wind which occasionally made playing your shots a bit tricky, although Paul Keanor had the perfect answer, with a stance wider than the span over the Medway when putting. Alongside Paul, my other partners for the day were Pete Tweddell and Darren (par) Parker, great company and banter. Considering how wet the past weeks had been the course was in excellent condition. Back in the clubhouse, it was a pleasure to use the clean and warm shower facilities and changing area. Suitably suited and booted, it was then time for a piping hot meal of Cottage pie and veg and liquid refreshment to wash it down with and to start collating the scorecards for the days rounds. Talking with many of you after the game, you can’t wait to play the course again. Congratulations go to all divisional winners, Andy Webb, Bill Bevon and a special mention for Dave Ellsworth, winning for the first time. The last group to tee off were the contenders for the Champions league with Peter Browning, Sean Downs, Gary Kisby and Mike Fairbrass. Congratulations to you all for doing so well across the year, but the ultimate spoils go to Sean Downs, well done Sean, a worthy winner. I look forward to joining with many of you at the Chopstick and Bowl for our Partners evening next Saturday. As you know, this was my last month as your captain and I have been proud and privileged to serve you this past year. I was extremely moved by your ovation at the end of proceedings and look forward to playing under Darren’s stewardship as from next month, he’ll do you proud. So good golf, good health, and my best wishes to you all
