Captain's Match Report
Driving to Redlibbets and listening to country music, (as is the penchant of Owen Callaghan, my chauffeur and good buddy), we contemplated as to what state we would find the course in and whether the rain would stay away.
On arrival, teas, coffees and tasty Bacon rolls greeted us which we ate sitting alongside the cosy glow and warmth of the clubhouse log burner. A good turnout of players, 36, with 28 staying on for a two course meal afterwards.
During my pre match announcements, I was advised as to a contentious change to nearest the pin on the par 3’s, which led to displeasure among members and committee alike. This is now a matter of discussion and any resolution will be advised accordingly.
My playing partners for the day were Nick Allcott and Peter Tweddell. In answer to the discussion in the car, the course was in a very good way considering all the rain of the week leading up to the day. As to the rain, we were left in doubt, as part way round it started and only stopped shortly before we finished!
One contentious point during the round occurred on the 9th green. Just as Peter was about to putt out, the starter called out to speed up a little, this got Peter riled as he then proceeded to 3 putt! Well done Nick, you played a great round and rightly won division 2, consistently good golf all the way round.
We could not wait to get showered and back in the warmth of the clubhouse.
It was then down to the business end of sorting out the scores on some very soggy cards. Peter had a brainwave and decided to dry the score card by the fire. This backfired when the heat sensitive label turned black, blocking out the player’s name! Fortunately, Peter was able to check the names of the rest of the group to establish whose card it was.
Congratulations to all winners and to Gilbert Louzado, winner of the Armistice Cup. I look forward to welcoming you all to Kings Hill on the 15th December for serious golf and frivolities and the odd tipple or two!!
Don’t forget to bring your secret Santa presents if you are staying for the meal.
