Captain's Match Report

‘Twas another sunny day as I was chauffeured to Dale Hill by my brother Kevin and I was thinking how fortunate we have been with the weather on recent Mags Society days. Apart from usual early morning traffic it was a straight forward drive to the course situated near Ticehust and with Bewl Water, Bedgebury and town of Battle all close by.

Captain Bob Crouch was away on holiday so I was asked to deputise for him. He assured me he will be back with us for Nizels next month and will look forward to greeting you all then.

There was already quite a buzz of anticipation when we arrived and shortly after the coffee and bacon rolls were handed out and lots drawn in the usual way to decide the order of play. Thirty five players made up of Eight 4 balls and One 3 ball, yet another excellent turn out on a very hot day. It was also very nice to see Candice one of our lady members back playing with us.

Our course for the day was the Ian Woosnam Course which I had never played before along with a number of our members.

The course was constructed in 1995 and opened in 1997. The course covers close to Two hundred acres giving a nice walk of 6,512 yards provided you hit straight!! (Mine took a few yards more !).

Ian Wooosnam who was involved with the course design was a big hitter for a small guy. During his career he won 1 Masters title in 1991 aged 33, had 10 top ten finishes in major tournaments, 52 professional wins and was a member of the European Ryder Cup team having success both as a player and thereafter as the captain. They used to eulogise about him hitting an 8 iron 140 yards (which I’m sure a number of you with todays clubs can reach and exceed).

As acting captain I teed off first and promptly stuffed my ball out of bounds and lost it resulting in 2 penalty shots on first hole which was to depict my first half scoring. The second half was completely the opposite to the first and nearly gave me a respectable score.

My golf buddies for the game were Gary Kisby, Derek Reed and Pete Tweddell. Hope the back is easing Derek? It was certainly a warm round of golf and worried about the groups following us as it was only going to get hotter. I’m very pleased to say everyone made it round safely. We couldn’t wait to get showered up and grab a pint of something cold. This done it was time to collate all the scores.

Well done Scott, the overall winner, Bob will present you with the Trophy at Nizels.

Well done to all our winners and well done to everyone who played.

Thank you all for your support, happy golfing and with the pressure off next month, look out, I’ll be back!!

See you all at Nizels on 19th August
