With the recent sad loss of Graham Nunn, I need to start off my report this month with a few words following the sad news that Dave Ealham has passed away.
I have known Dave since we played cricket together back in the day when we were both based at County Hall. (Was that really 45 years ago!) Dave was such an all-round gifted sportsman and such was his nature, he was always generous and kind with his encouragement to those of us who were not so gifted. Dave was also someone who, if you asked, could give you a view on almost any subject, and do so with wit, and his trademark wry sense of humour. I know how much Dave loved all the sports he played, but also know just how much he loved playing his golf with MAGS. Therefore, in saying how much Dave will be sorely missed by his family and many friends, can we spare in our thoughts a few moments for him and his wife Mary.
And, so to Dale Hill. Because of the Open being on at the same time, several regulars had made their way to Sandwich, and therefore this month we had 24 members assemble at a very warm and sunny Dale Hill.
Dave Verga was back in action after his enforced lay off with a hand injury, and Tony Jacobs with his foot now much improved was looking forward to his round.
I was playing alongside Mark Parsons and Scott Cleaver and heading off down the first, it was readily apparent the day was predictably going to be a hot one. That said, the course was in excellent condition, which is one of the prime reasons Dale Hill has become such a firm MAGS favourite. The usual ebb and flow of play followed until we got to the par 5 8th This Dale Hill describes as ’A true three shot Par 5, which demands your full concentration’. Well, that’s fine except my second shot hit an old tree on the full and came to rest in its hollow trunk, much to my incredulity and my playing partners smiles. A shot in a million one could say.
On the 14th the back problems that I sometimes suffer from, decided today was going to be one of those days, and despite some welcome paracetamol from Mark, my round ground to a halt after coming off the 16th green. I think I may have reached the stage where in future I may need to consider using a buggy.
Back at the clubhouse, cooling showers and then even cooler beer were gratefully consumed alongside a lovely dinner of steak pie with the trimmings followed by a chocolate torte and cream.
And so, to the winners, with a score of 32 points, Peter Steer won Division 3, Division 2 went to Bob Crouch with a score of 31 points, but with a score of 34 points, Derek Reed not only took Division 1, but was also winner of the Summer Bowl. Therefore, many congratulations to Peter and Bob, and especially to Derek for a fine winning round of golf.
Just to complete things, nearest the pin prizes are listed in the results and Mike Kingsman was best guest with a score of 36 points. Mention should also be made of Dave Williams, who for this round was still ineligible to score championship points but, who came in with an excellent score of 38 points.
Our next event is on Friday 20th August at Nizels Golf Club, Nizels Lane, Hildenborough, Kent TN11 8NG. I have not played there before but this is a championship course with apparently water coming into play on several holes so should be fun!
So, hopefully see you at Nizels, and in the meantime, stay safe!
