Captain's Match Report

Chilly: uncomfortably or unpleasantly cold.

Now, perhaps not quite everyone will agree with me, but arriving at Broome Park Golf Course on what was otherwise a good-looking day; one had to say the temperature was decidedly chilly. But the forecast seemed to suggest that things might get a tad warmer, but only time would tell.

This was also the day when a little bit of history was made because this was the first MAGS event to use the World Handicap System which uses a slope rating for calculating a player’s handicap for any one course. Thankfully, for me anyway, Tim had done all the calculations for us and all we had to do was play off the handicap on our score card. However, our handicap index (i.e., our MAGS handicap) will still be adjusted according to how well we played, but again those calculations will thankfully be done for us, this time courtesy of Peter Tweddell, and his marvellous handicap spreadsheet. Regardless, this World Handicap system is here to stay and something therefore we all need to get to grips with.

Anyway, moving on, some 34 members plus guests travelled to the course which was a tremendous turn out and indicative I think, of us all very much wanting to get out and about again. It was a bit of a shame that the bacon rolls were not hot as they should have been, but there it was.

Dressed as best we could to keep warm and yet play golf, my group of Dave Ealham, Darren Parker and Trevor Woods ventured onto the first tee and a round of mixed fortunes. The course itself was in excellent condition, considering the club still had several members of its green keeping team furloughed. One thing that was noticeable was that some of the greens, which are usually so true, seemed a bit two paced and bobbly, or was that just my ball? Anyway, as our round progressed, it was obvious that any hoped-for improvement in the temperature was not going to materialise, but goodness, on such a bright, clear day the views across the course were certainly something to raise the spirits.

A highlight of my round was my fourth shot onto the green at the 9th, for which I must pay thanks to Trevor, who always comes up with good advice. I also need to mention the excellent birdie Darren got of the 14th hole. As we all know this is a long par 4 with a SI of 1, so to be on the edge of the green for 2 and then to nail the putt was just excellent.

On completion of our round, it was certainly very nice to be able to buy a drink, watch a few of the other matches take on the pond in front of the 18th green, and have a socially distance chat, something that has obviously not been possible for quite a while.

When all the scores were totted up, from the 34 members who took part, Kevin Jacobs took Division 3 with 28 points and Darren Parker took Division 2 with a score of 34 points. But leading the way in Division 1 with the best score of the day was Dave Verga with an excellent 38 points. Therefore, many congratulations to Ian and Adrian, and especially to Dave who as the overall winner, receives the St Georges Cup. And just to say best guest was ‘Sam’ with a very good 36 points.

Our next event is at Boughton Golf Club, Boughton ME13 9AJ on Friday 21 May 2021 and as usual Tim will send further details nearer the time.

Also, I hope you now have in your diary Captains Day this year is taking place at the Weald of Kent on Thursday 24 June 2021.

Best wishes and stay safe,

Geoff
