Redlibbets is one of those courses that can be a challenge no matter what your handicap is and when you think the average score for the day was 25 points then perhaps that is a reflection of how it played when we met on Friday 16 October 2020 to compete for the Autumn Cup.
As usual around the club house social distancing was rightly being rigorously enforced and I must give a thank you to ‘ourselves’ for following the arrival times we had been allocated by Tim as that now seems to be working well.
Following a bacon roll and a welcome cup of coffee, I was joined this month by Sean Downs and Peter Steer, who was trying out a new driver. Under cloudy but benign conditions my first drive managed to hit a tree on a wide fairway and from there on my round became increasingly ‘interesting’, with me finding the sand with what seemed, monotonous regularity.
As the round progressed Peter, was getting to grips with his new driver and was getting some solid drives away. As for Sean, I said I would mention his drive on the 7th which seemed to go on for ever. It was not quite the 250 yards I initially thought it was, but 200 plus was still impressive.
As our round progressed, one thing that became obvious was that two of the other three societies at the course that day, were playing nearest the pins and one had a longest drive marker out. As clearly set out in the email Paul Damper sent to all members on 28 September, this is not in accordance with current guidance from Golf England and the rules we as a Society are following in order to keep everyone as safe as possible.
Back at the Clubhouse, a rolling meal of steak and ale pie followed by sticky toffee pudding was very welcome, and as Peter Tweddell and I went through the score cards it became clear that whilst there was some consistent scores only four members had scored in excess of 30 points, which is perhaps again a reflection of the fact this is a course that can present a challenge across all handicaps.
Anyway, Ian Brenchley took Division 3 with 29 points and Ian Marshallsay took Division 2 with 31 points. The winner of Division 1 and the overall winner with an impressive 33 points playing off a handicap of 6 was Stuart Ryan. Therefore, many congratulations to the Division winners and especially to Stuart who as the overall winner, receives the Autumn Shield.
I should also make mention of Mark Harris who was best guest with an excellent 34 points.
Our next event is at Southern Valley Golf Club, Thong Lane, Gravesend on Friday 13 November 2020, and as usual Tim will send further details nearer the time.
Stay safe
