This should have been Captains Day at Bearsted Golf Club with a later start and some additional challenges such as pink ball and putting competitions. Followed then by a leisurely evening meal, to which we could invite our nearest and dearest. Then along comes COVID and all that gets knocked on the head. Added to that, Bearsted decided late in the day that they didn’t actually want our custom after all. Therefore, although we had a scaled back day at West Malling, it is thanks to the not inconsiderable efforts of Tim that we were on a golf course at all.
The day started with breakfast which consisted with what was, in my opinion, one of the best bacon baguettes going. Things went slightly downhill when we got a telling off from a ‘manager’ because Ian and I talked to more than those on our table but hey ho!
Anyway, moving on, under lovely sunny conditions the first group of myself, Peter Tweddell, Scott Cleaver, and my guest Martin Vousden, who had travelled down from Scotland. (and this is where I name drop – is an ex-editor of Today’s Golfer, a golf rules guru, which isn’t always helpful - and my mate since primary school).
Having negotiated the few holes I think we were each beginning to realise that possibly the overall winner was not going to come from our group but we nonetheless had our ‘moments’, which when you get to the end of your round makes you think perhaps it really is all worth it. 😊
Back at the club house we could eat our ham egg and chips in the dining room so long as we kept in the same group as we had played our round of golf with. And just to make sure, ‘the manger’ was never far away to make sure no one spoke to anyone they shouldn’t have!
With Peter using his wonderful results spreadsheet, we could work through the returning score cards reasonably quickly. The only thing I would ask, is could we all please use the box on the scorecard to record the points scored. Thanks.
Not being able to ‘announce’ the results in case another telling off came my way, I walked around each table to give the main results. Division 3 went to Mark Parsons with 37 points and Division 2 and the overall winner was Dave Verga with 39 points. Division 1 went to Barry England.
Therefore, congratulations to the Division winners and especially to Dave Verga for being the overall winner.
Our next event is at Redlibbets Golf Club on Friday 16 October 2020 and as usual Tim will send further details nearer the time.
Stay safe
