Captain's Match Report
With the weather forecast predicting strong winds and the Covid restrictions still adding their own challenges, 27 members and 4 guests travelled this month to Littlestone Warren Golf course. On arrival the weather seemed to be not that bad and the Covid social distancing arrangements, which included a temperature test on entering the restaurant was an indication of the precautions the Club had in place to ensure everyone’s safety.
The Club provided an excellent full English breakfast following which my group of Trevor Woods, Ian Marshallsay and his guest Mark Carney ventured out to the first tee and a round of mixed fortunes. Apart from a couple of holes the wind on the front nine seemed to be blowing in a generally favourable direction but by the time we turned for the tenth the strength of the wind had increased, and for our group anyway seemed to be blowing directly down almost each hole in the direction of the tee box. Therefore, regretting that I had left my 12mm canon at home, seeing some of my drives being blown back almost as far as I could hit them was something I could only smile and shrug my shoulders about. And regardless links golf is supposed to be challenging, isn’t it?
On completion of our round I think we all felt a sense of relief and the Clubhouse was a welcome haven for a beer and an enjoyable socially distanced meal.
As the results from other groups rolled in it became clear that for some the conditions had not proved to be a handicap and some very respectable scores had been achieved. Therefore, many congratulations go to Tony Jacobs who won the day and Division 3 with an excellent score of 38 points. He was closely followed by Division 1 winner Bill Bevon with 37 points and Division 2 winner Dave Verga with 34 points.
Nearest the pin prizes went to Peter Tweddell, Adrian Harvenko, Stuart Ryan, Bob Crouch and Tony Jacobs. Best guest was Peter Steer.
Our next event is at West Malling Golf Club on Friday 18th September 2020 and as usual Tim will send further details nearer the time.
Also, we did of course have what may have been the first MAGS open air Annual General Meeting. Dave Verga will be circulating the Minutes in due course but just to confirm the following were elected to the Committee:
