Captain's Match Report

We had a decent turnout today of 27 players including a guest and Lady member, and after a full English and brisk AGM, I emerged blinking into the sunlight as the new captain of MAGS, thanks one and all for the confidence and I hope to serve you well.
One of (possibly the only) advantages of being captain meant I was out first with a mixed ability group of Messer’s Catchpole and Verga.
Mr Verga studiously protecting his handicap for the forthcoming European tour unfortunately returned to his old form, despite some magnificent drives. Catch won nearest the pin in three on the 12th (a late change from the 9th we all thought at tee off) with a magnificent third shot which he holed out for a bridie and was a well deserved second in Division Three with 35 points. In an act of bizzare masochism I played out of my skin (although I say so myself) thus slashing my fully deserved and long standing 28 in the new handicap system to a measly 24.
I was unusually blessed by the presence of the golf fairy on my shoulder for the whole round but my experience is she may not visit again for many a round to come, but lets see. I ended up shooting a 41 and as Derek Reed nailed the nearest the pin on the 6th he was unable to win the 17th as well and I was the only other name on the card.
No one managed to hit the green on the 13th -it was nearly 200 yards despite being a par three so no real shame in that.
Paul Damper was nearest the pin on the second, which with a decent gust of wind should have been a hole in one Well done Paul.
With a consistently good round including the nearest the pin Derek Reed shot a 37 to win Division One.
Our Handicap secretary Pete Tweddell is also suffering at his own hand as he won Division Two with a very good score of 35.
My 41 secured Division Three and also the elusive St. George's Trophy for the best score of the day.
Gill Ryan won the Ladys section as the only Lady who braved the muslim weather (you had to be there).
It was way too fierce for our guest who failed to return to the clubhouse and was declared MIA but as the solitary guest he had obviously seen enough!
If you are in the summer matchplay please see the bulletin elsewhere on the website regarding the draw, I look forward to meeting Roy G somewhere soon – good luck to you all, make sure you enjoy it, if not the golf then company at least!
The next meeting is ON THE SECOND FRIDAY NOT THE TRADITIONAL THIRD FRIDAY just to keep you on your toes and our fixture fixer Mr Grimes will no doubt be in touch. We will almost all have new handicaps so that should make for an interesting round.
If we are very lucky the winners of empty boxes may receive medals next time but we shall have to wait and see!
Thank you all again for what for me was a great days golf played in a good spirit with much laughter – long may it continue.
El Capitaine
