Malling Area Golf Society

2014/15 September 19th Round 6:
Cobtree Manor Park Golf Course - The Captain's Trophy

MAGS are going back to their roots. Cobtree Manor is where MAGS was born and Captain Pete thought it was about time that this course was visited again. The course does play rather short, so to win this event you will have to be clinical on and around the greens.

The event will be rounded off with a three course meal. Monies will be collected during breakfast on the day just like at every monthly event. Please do bring guests for both golf and the meal, it'll be a cracking day!

Captain's Match Report

Firstly, thank you to the 33 golfers and 26 diners for supporting my Captain's Day. Also a big thank you to Peter Gray for sorting out the cards and monies at the beginning of the day and my Vice, Mark Parsons, for marking pink balls and handing out the cards.
The day started with a hearty full english and a packed out first tee. With pink balls at the ready the short but tricky first hole was navigated with varying degrees so success. Mark Parsons deserves a mention for his birdie on the first giving him a massive 5 points! The nearest the pins were well contested with Paul Keenor coming close to a magnificent hole-in-one on the 4th hole. The greens at Cobtree aren't the easiest to maneuver for one reason or another so well done to Barry England with an impressive 31 putts winning him the honour of being the Captain's Putter. None of the pink balls made it the whole way round, most being lost during the first few holes, however, 3 of the nine made it past the midway point with the winners, Group 4, collecting 30 points over 13 holes.
Now to the impressive final scores... the top 3 positions all tied on 40 points shared all the division prizes. Third place and the Division 3 winner, Dave Elsworth, missed out through count back of the back nine by 19 to 22. The overall spoils were fought for even closer with count back going to the final 6 holes 15 verses 14 points. Division 2 winner Steve Tothill was unlucky to miss out on the top prize to the Division 1 winner Graham Gove. I'm sure Steve will take solace though, because 10 Champions League points moves him up to the top spot!
I don't know how he does it but once again Paul Damper was a member of the winning group in the Team of the Day competition. Group 9 scored an impressive 52 points a clear 2 above Group 8 that included two individual 40 pointers. Maybe Paul has rabbit feet and a pocket full of four leaf clovers!
Finally a titbit for the stats lovers out there... I was quietly worried with my choice of course because it's relatively short and 'easy'. I was expecting shouts of 'high handicaps will dominate, the low ones don't stand a chance!'. Interestingly however, six of the seven Division 1 players finished in the top ten positions.
Thanks again to all participants, I look forward to seeing you again at Westerham.
